My Brain Hurts!

By Aleya of Cairo

Hi Everyone!

I hope you are all having a great day. I was going to post about another topic that I have lived with my whole life, but after thinking about it I couldn’t see it in my heart to post something that seems so trivial when people next door to Egypt are dying.

Today I came across this quote and it struck a major chord with me.

The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.”

― Edmund Burke

My brain hurts from all the posts, media messages, friends messages, people calling me racist, videos, pictures, and the silence of the international community about the Palestinian/Israeli conflict right now.  I’m by no means a expert on the subject, and in fact have been on Facebook all week trying to get different perspectives especially from my Jewish friends, because I want to know why there is so much silence and why the world does nothing.

In the end I can’t make sense of it all.  Israel (and my friends there) are terrified that Hamas wants to destroy them off the face of the earth. They were persecuted beyond belief in the Holocaust and before, and no one turned and helped them until it was too late and 6 million Jews had perished along with many others, with Hitler’s grand scheme of cleansing the earth of undesirables.  I will not go into all the specifics of this,  but all information is on the internet if you want to research anything and I suggest you do if you want to know more.   The Israelis believe they have every right to defend themselves and I believe they also have a right to defend themselves…..

What is happening in Gaza is a tragedy beyond my comprehension.  I only watched the news briefly for the last few days since I was on the internet so much trying to figure this whole thing out and talking to people who are upset.  Today I saw some videos about what is happening there and I literally cried for half an hour at the horror I saw.  I saw a video of ambulance drivers trying to rescue people and right in front of the camera, bombs went off.  It wasn’t one bomb that went off , it was several in succession.  The ambulance drivers were all hurt and many people were wounded and some died.

Then I saw a video of a 6 year old boy pleading to die in Palestine, wondering why they (the Israelis) hate them so much and treat them like prisoners.  It was heartbreaking.

When this started conflict started, I posted videos much to the consternation of my Jewish friends and dance community, and said this is wrong. When they told me their side, my heart ached for their pain also.  Yes they have had to live with “terrorism” their whole lives, and I remember when I went to Israel years ago, even going to the mall you had to have your hand bag searched. That was something unusual to me and really made me think.

I cannot imagine living on both sides of the situation.  But I also don’t understand how Israel can justify killing over 1000 civilians,  many children  and injuring  6000 so far, and blowing up their only power plant so there is no electricity in all of Gaza. What will the doctors do?  How will they help anyone if there is no electricity for medical equipment? Israel says that Hamas is shooting rockets which don’t even get to the people of Israel because of the high tech iron dome. The Palestinians  are no match in a war.  In a  real war both sides have weapons, tanks, fighter jets and guns and ammunition, and both have loss of life.   I have never, ever seen a war where one side has weapons and the other side has clothing  that they wear in the street.  That is not a war, that is a massacre when you are killing innocent civilians.

I cannot wrap my brain around why the whole entire world is doing nothing.  This is an Arab area, in a land of Arabic people and no one will come to the defense of the Palestinians or even at least say what Israel is doing is wrong? Really?  They must have someone that cares about their people.  I also can’t understand why when I post something about my dog, I will get 50-100 likes but if I post about Gaza…..crickets.  People wake up this is your world!! One day you will need help and no one will stand up for you if you don’t stand up for them.  The LEAST we can do is acknowledge  that it is happening, to let Palestinians know that they are not forgotten and that someone cares.  This is like Hitler all over again, except the tables have turned and now its the Palestinians who they are trying to extinguish instead of the Jews.  They just happen to be on the other side of the fence now.  But remember what happened to Hilter?…….history is trying to teach us a lesson but we don’t get it. All we care about is getting the new Iphone or the latest car, or the most beautiful clothes, or the best house.  We just turn away because its easier to turn and say “thats their problem, they all want to kill each other? Well let them. ”

We all just want to live like humans. That’s the bottom line.  Religions divide us and make us hate each other.  Wake up people!! If your religion tells you that you should hate another religion does that make sense?  Doesn’t all religions say we are all one?  We are all born from the same source? That we are all brothers and sisters?  So why am I trying to kill my brother or sister?  I believe that God should be the only one to take me out.  He should be the only one to have that right.  I would not be able to kill a dog in the street much less a human being, so how can we sit here and let it happen and keep our eyes and mouths closed?

I hope this all ends soon.  I don’t see that happening, but at least I hope that we will learn something from this and justice will prevail.  There needs to be laws in place to protect civilians. No one should be allowed to bomb civilians.  Apparently we have laws but they are not harsh enough because its still allowed to happen. No one should be allowed to bomb UN schools and I don’t care if you have rockets hiding in there or not.  If you need to take them out, then you have to evacuate the school and do a search and make sure they are there before you are allowed to bomb any UN installations.  People have to be able to run to a safe place in a war.

Pray for peace and if you believe in God remember that we are all brothers and sisters and we need to respect each other and if you don’t believe in God remember that we are all humans and need to respect each other.   Thank you for reading my post and I wish you peace and prosperity in the future.

Aleya, I am in the same situation. Since all of this started I have no peace, I frequently cry and I am hurting, upset with the world and with my fb friends. I also posted, just to painfully look at the result, a picture of myself with my friend’s dog. I had about 46 likes and 17 comments about the dog in the first 30 minutes after the post. On the other hand, I’ve posted videos, vital information about the conflict, I’ve had asked, begged for my friends to speak out, to join the movement but just a few had responded. I can’t look at so much injustice and keep silence or to be indifferent to the suffering of others. I thank you so much for giving voice to those who had been silenced. I’ve followed all your work and I admire your altruism.

Thank you Valia. We can only do what we can. But if we say nothing, then we are just as guilty. Keep posting and hopefully there will be a MAJOR movement started and we can get somewhere. Sending you peace and love. Thank you for taking the time to write. :)
